5 tips for your Google My Business listing

Keeping your Google My Business listing up to date is essential.  Why? Because it helps with local SEO and if customers are Googling you whilst on the move, then they are highly likely ready to buy.

So what they find when they search for “hotels near me” or ” bike repairs near me” your listing better be accurate – or they’ll be visiting your competitors’ businesses instead.

The listing is entirely FREE, the only limitation is that you need to have some face-to-face interaction with your customers, you can’t be a solely online business.

If you are confused about how this is different to other Google listings, it used to be called Google Local or Google Places – basically this is your business listing on Google Maps and Google Search.

The 5 simple things you can get sorted today on your Google My Business, business page. Firstly, log in to your Google account or get one created pronto.  Start here: google.com/business

  • Claim your listing

    • Your business is probably already on Google Maps, so make sure you claim it and own it! Avoid creating duplicate listings
  • Make sure the location is accurate

    • Be precise with your address and contact info. Make sure the location pin is right on your doorstep. People use Google maps for directions so make sure you direct them to the right place.
  • Ensure your contact details are up-to-date and 100% complete

    • Check the contact number is up to date and accessible and don’t forget your opening times and any exceptions like weekends, bank holidays etc
  • Make the most of the page branding opportunities

    • Add your logo, great images (inside, outside, the team), 360º photo spheres or even a video – this is a great chance to showcase your business
  • Add your services

    • Google customises the listing based on the business type, so make sure it’s correct. For example, if you’re a restaurant you can add a menu. It also uses this to show your location in search results, so give this listing some time as it really helps your SEO.

You want to make sure that when people Google you on the move the search result will help them find you – not down the road, not next door and you certainly don’t want to direct them there if you’re closed.
